BMW M8 GTE Info
BMW M8 GTE is a racecar that was launched by BMW in 2017 to compete in the GTE class of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the GTLM class of IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, thus marking BMW’s return to 24 Hours of Le Mans. The last time BMW took part in 24 Hours of Le Mans was in 2011 with M3 GT2. BMW’s glorious history in Le Mans dates all the way back to 1939.
That year, BMW 328 delivered the automaker’s first Le Mans championship after 236 laps. In 1999, the BMW V12 LMR of Yannick Dalmas, Pierluigi Martini, and Joachim Winkelhock was crown the overall champion of 24 Hours of Le Mans. Following its debut, BMW M8 GTE won two races at the IMSA Championship. Subsequently, at the 24 Hours of Daytona held in the US state of Florida from 26 to 27 January 2019, BMW M8 GTE won the GTLM class championship for BMW Team RLL.
In 2020, BMW was once again crowned the champion for the GTLM class at 24 Hours of Daytona with BMW M8 GTE winning the trophy. BMW M8 GTE also finished as one of the top car models at the 2020 Michelin Endurance Cup, which included four classic IMSA endurance races at Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen and Atlanta. Powered by a twin-turbocharged V8 engine, M8 GTE’s capacity was capped at 4.0 liters to meet race regulations.
Power is transmitted through a six-speed sequential gearbox, which can deliver a horsepower of over 500hp. The all-round lightweight design allows the M8 GTE to weigh just 1,220kg, despite measuring 4,980mm in length and 2,046mm in width. In order to shorten development time, BMW used 3D printing technology at its additive manufacturing center to create parts for M8 GTE’s aerodynamic research. After receiving the initial concept from the aerodynamic design team, the 3D printing center can materialize the idea within 24 hours and send it to the Aero Lab for wind tunnel tests and verification.
BMW carried out hundreds of wind tunnel tests before finalizing the M8 GTE’s aerodynamic desiw, ultimately creating a body with strong downforce and minimal drag. The innovative aerodynamic wheel rim showcased as a concept at the Frankfurt International Motor Show is one of the fruits of BMW’s aerodynamic R&D.
